Tantalus Enters New Market with Smart Grid Deployment at Mohegan Sun Casino

Nation’s second largest casino to deploy Tantalus communications for AMI

Raleigh, NC – May 30, 2013 – Tantalus, a leading provider of Smart Grid communications, today announced that the Mohegan Tribal Utility Authority, which serves the Mohegan Sun, has selected Tantalus as the exclusive smart grid communications provider for the facility. Mohegan Sun, which utilizes more than one hundred GE polyphase meters at its casino, hotel, and independently owned retail stores, will deploy the Tantalus Utility Network (TUNet®) for precise, real-time meter reading via a high-performance fiber backbone. Mohegan Sun joins a small number of casinos around the world to deploy a fully operational, independent smart grid solution at its facilities.

Owned and operated by the Mohegan Tribe of Indians of Connecticut, the Connecticut-based Mohegan Sun operates in an approximately 3.1 million-square-foot facility, making it the second largest casino in the United States. The facilities include more than 300,000 square feet of gaming space within three separate casinos, 130,000 square feet of retail space, a 10,000-seat Mohegan Sun Arena, 100,000 square feet of meeting and convention space and the approximately 1,200-room luxury Sky Hotel Tower. The casino’s electrical load requirement currently tops 25 MW, enough to power a small town, which makes identifying and implementing advanced energy management tools a measure of practicality. Mohegan will immediately utilize TUNet for meter reading automation and administration with the ability to incorporate future advanced energy management applications.

“As we continue to expand our operations, we look for technology partners that will grow and scale with us while enhancing the experience of our customers,” said Paul Woronik, Utility Electrical Engineer of the Mohegan Tribal Utility Authority. “Fortunately, when we began searching for a vendor that could offer us an advanced meter reading solution for our multi-services utility, we didn’t have to look far. We looked to our neighbors at Norwich, CT and Jewett City, CT where Tantalus smart grid deployments are already demonstrating value.”

With some of the most advanced technology in the casino industry, Mohegan Sun is no stranger to innovation. The casino boasts a light-speed fiber backbone and premier cabling solution designed to practically eliminate electric failure and downtime. With the addition of TUNet, the organization furthers its commitment to adopt the most efficient, technologically advanced solutions available while implementing the groundwork to accommodate future growth.

“Mohegan Sun has already proven itself to be one of the most technologically savvy casinos in the United States,” said Eric Murray, President and CEO of Tantalus. “They understand the importance of adopting technologies like AMI in order to provide customers with the most advanced and seamless experience at all times. We also welcome the opportunity to demonstrate the downward scalability of TUNet by providing a robust, full-service smart grid network contained within a single facility. We’re proud to partner with the Mohegan Tribal Utility Authority for our first ever casino deployment.”
